Obituary of Suzanne O. Sherman
Suzanne O. Sherman, 65, of Troy passed away peacefully at Troy’s Samaritan Hospital on June 1, 2019 after a brief illness, with her sisters and her dear friend Pastor Janet Douglass by her side.Suzanne was born on November 23, 1953 in Albany, the daughter of the late Raymond and Madeline (McCormick) Sherman of Colonie.
She attended South Colonie Schools, graduating from Colonie Central High School in 1971. Suzanne was passionate about the French language and culture from a young age, and went on to study and attain fluency at the University at Albany. She graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor’s degree in French with an emphasis on teaching. After graduating, Suzanne worked for many years as a customer service representative for Travelers Insurance, along with other insurance companies in the Capital District. She also worked for a number of years as a sales associate in Housewares at Macy’s in Colonie Center. In recent years, Sue was an active member and Volunteer Office Manager at her Church, Christ Church United Methodist in Troy, developing a close friendship with other parishioners and Pastor Janet Douglass. She participated in many of the church’s musical groups, and was a member of the staff Parish Committee. She enjoyed working in worship planning and often read scriptures during church services.
Suzanne is survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Pellegrino (George Engle) of Watervliet and Rayanne (William) Sheehan of Rotterdam. In addition, she is survived by her cherished nieces, Lindsay Sheehan of Rotterdam, Victoria Lechtenberg (Justin) of Niskayuna, and her nephews Connor Sheehan of Knox, Justin Pellegrino (Samantha) and Adam Pellegrino (Jamie) of Troy. She is also survived by her grand-nieces and nephews, Tyla, Marc, and Cayden Pier, Madison and Carlia Pellegrino, and Caleb and Elaina Pellegrino. Suzanne also leaves behind her beloved cat, Sophie, and her good friends Ruth Morant and Nancy Burgin who were like sisters to her.
She was predeceased by her parents, Raymond and Madeline (McCormick) Sherman of Colonie.
Sue loved animals, especially the many cats she had as companions over the years, and in her free time she enjoyed reading, baking, sewing and crocheting. Sue took great joy in helping others, and could often be found volunteering with the other members of the church. Those who knew her know well that she always put loved ones ahead of herself in times of need, and she will be remembered for her generosity, selflessness and kindness. The family would like to thank the staff of the ICU at Samaritan Hospital for their kindness and compassion.
A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, June 30th -- at 12:00 p.m. at Christ Church United Methodist, 35 State St. in Troy.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Suzanne’s memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
