Kenney, John J., Watervliet - John H. Kenney, entered into eternal life on April 22, 2017 . Born in Cohoes on August 9, 1940, John was a graduate of SUNY Albany with a Masters in American History and English. He also obtained an Associates Degree from SUNY Cobleskill in Ornamental Horticulture and Floral Design. During the Vietnam war, John served in Augsburg in the Southern (Bavaria) part of Germany. In 1963 John opened J. H. Kenney's Flowers Inc. in Watervliet which he operated until 2011.
John was a member of the former Albany Florists Associates; District Representative for the Florists Transworld Delivery Associates; a former Board President of the Senior Center; on the Board of Directors of the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society; former Secretary of the Watervliet Historical Society; a member of the Board of Directors for the Watervliet Historical Museum; a volunteer in the Aids union of Albany Medical Center and a volunteer for REC (Residents Encounter Christ) a prison Ministry of the Albany Catholic Diocese. Throughout his lifetime, John worked on several committees to serve the City of Watervliet.
John is predeceased by his parents, Frank J. and Agnes M. (LaJunesnesse) Kenney and his dear friend and business partner Carmen DiNata. There are no immediate survivors, but as John would say, "Good Friends are much more reliable than blood relatives." He is survived by his dear friends, Linda Dunbar of Latham and her family, Steve and Laurel Rice, Lawrence Bariteau of Cohoes, Robert & Ellen Passanno and Jeff Collett of Watervliet, Lucille LaCosse of Green Island and many others too numerous to mention.
Friends may say their farewells to John at the Konicek & Collett Funeral Home, 1855 Twelfth Avenue, Watervliet, today, Tuesday, April 25th from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Following a Mass of Christian burial at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, 2416 Seventh Avenue, Watervliet, NY on Wednesday, April 26th at 9:30 am, intermittent following at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at 12:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish.
