Garry Lee Slater
Garry Lee Slater passed away peacefully in his Rensselaer home on August 25th, 2017 with his daughter, Kimberly Slater and grandson, Gerald Andres at his side. Garry died at an early age of 66, after battling cancer for the past 5 months. Garry was born on July 5, 1951 in Cobleskill, New York, to his parents, the late, Paul Slater Sr and Marjorie Cross Slater. Following his high school graduation, he joined the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Texas and Alaska from 1969-1973. Immediately after discharge he served as a Rensselaer County Deputy Sheriff.
Garry played guitar and loved music, especially the oldies. He had the amazing gift of making any child laugh with his many goofy faces! He taught his first-born granddaughter, Brianna Andres how to drive. He was very proud of her and she spent many hours with him during his fight with cancer. During this time, Brianna gave birth to his first great-grand daughter, Amelia Andres Lawless. Garry spent a lot of time with Brianna and Amelia in the past few months, which made him happy. Thankfully Garry was also able to see his grandson Gerald Andres "Genius" graduate High School before his passing. He also spent some of his last days with his son Garry L Slater Jr. Garry spent the last several years with his partner Brenda Cross. Garry loved Brenda and took care of her through the years. He will be missed greatly by her. He loved her children, Brittany, Ashley and Keith and treated her grandchildren Keagan and Kalina as his own, always making them laugh.
In addition to Brenda, Garry is survived by his two children, Kimberly Slater and her husband Gerald Andres and Garry Lee Slater Jr.; his Brother, Bruce Slater and his wife Eileen; John Slater, and his wife Debi Carr Zaccagnino; many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. Garry is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Paul Slater Jr.
