What is a Funeral Director?

Funeral directors provide families with much needed support following the loss of a loved one.  Funeral directors arrange and direct funeral services.  In addition to directing funeral services, directors file death certificates and other required documents for burial or cremation.  Funeral directors remove the body from the place of death, prepare the body for viewing (if desired by the family), direct all aspects of funeral ceremony and final disposition of the deceased.  Funeral directors assist families in the early stages of grief. The services that funeral directors provide will assist families in coping with their loss.

What does a funeral director do?

  • Provide professional care for the deceased including embalming, dressing, casketing, cosmetology, and hair dressing upon request
  • Meeting with family members to discuss and arrange all aspects of the funeral or memorial service
  • Compile information about the deceased to prepare an obituary announcing the death

Other responsibilities of a funeral director

  • Funeral directors make arrangements with cemeteries, crematories, or other places of disposition
  • Assist in arranging for music, clergy honorariums, pall bearers, and special services (fraternal or military) as requested by the family
  • The funeral director will supervise funeral processions and assist families following the funeral service with any questions that they may have
